Stress can retard the benefits of eating healthy
For the first time a research shows stress can alter the effects of eating good fats
Good fats are very good for our health. So a diet enriched with good healthy fats is the way to go for a good life. But often times women report they eat healthy and still their health does not improve. For all those women out there who munch on good fats but still fail to catch good health we have the perfect solution; Chill out!
A new research has found that women eating good fats cannot take part of its health benefits as long as they are stressed out. It seems benefits of good fats vanish for women when they are in stress.
The research carried out at the Ohio State University found women who eat a breakfast filled with good fats i.e. mono-saturated fats had better blood test precursors than those who ate a breakfast with saturated fats. However the same women eating good fats did not have any positive precursors in blood if they had a stressful event before eating a good fats breakfast. So basically the stress of the day before erased benefits linked to the healthy fat choice.
According to Jan Kiecolt-Glaser a professor of psychiatry and psychology, this proves stress matters when it comes to diet. This is the first study of its kind to show that stress has the power to even cancel out the benefits of eating good fats. The study has been published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry.
Previously it was known diet and stress can alter levels of inflammation in the body but not to what extent. Inflammation is the root cause of many chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, arthritis etc. Good fats are known to lower inflammation therefore they are so essential in the diet.
